Greek soldiers fired warning shots at a Turkish helicopter after it approached a small Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, in a dangerous escalation of tensions between the regional rivals.
The island of Ro, just a few kilometers off the coast of Turkey, has become the latest flashpoint between the neighbors after months of rising tensions and nationalist rhetoric.
The incident, in which Greek soldiers reportedly fired tracers at the Turkish helicopter, happened on Monday evening.

After opening fire, the helicopter left the area and buzzed the island at low altitude.
"The order to fire warnings to force the helicopter to leave came in the context of heightened surveillance and response measures adopted due to rising tensions with Turkey," a Greek military source told AFP.
The source said the helicopter, which appears to be operated by the Turkish coast guard, flew outside the border of the air traffic control identification zone between the two countries, which are both NATO members.
